A Brief History of Alfa Romeo
Ask anyone; Alfa Romeo buyers purchase with their heart, rather than their head. There’s something in the logo, the heritage, or even maybe in the soul of the cars themselves that make them irresistible to those of use inclined to engines.
But where did this harvester of hearts begin?
In 1906, the original “Alfa” was founded under the name Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq, or SAID…catchy abbreviation. Slow sales and a Milan-move meant that investors created another company, one with a more recognisable brand: A.L.F.A, which stands for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The “Romeo” section of Alfa Romeo came from the surname of Nicola Romeo, the entrepreneur who took control of the company in 1915.
After a year of producing cars, Alfa dipped their toes into performance cars and entered an advanced Grand Prix model called the GP1914. As with all automobile manufacturers however, both World Wars halted production.
Once everything simmered down, Alfa had a string of business partners from Fiat to Ford and began to focus on small sports coupes – becoming something of a style icon for continental chic and Italian heritage.
