The Nissan Leaf has been named World Car Of The Year at the New York Motor Show. The Leaf beat the other two finalists, the Audi A8 and BMW 5 Series from 39 other entrants. To qualify, vehicles had to be available for sale on at least two continents during the period of time Jan 2010 to March 2011.
The show also previewed a racing version of the Nissan leaf, the Leaf Nismo RC. The car designed as a full racing car boasts carbon fibre monocoque bodywork, weighing in at 2068 pounds, a full 40% less than the current production vehicle. In early testing the Nismo RC raced from 0 to 60 in an impressive 6.85 seconds with a top speed of 93 MPH. Pretty impressive for a car that is powered by a lithium-ion battery!
The Ferrari 458 Italia won World Performance Car beating off competition from the Mercedes Benz SLS and evergreen Porsche Turbo.
The 2011 World Car Design Award went to the Aston Martin Rapide fending off competition from the Ferrari 458 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
The New York International Auto Show is an annual event that has been held since 1900. Manufacturers showcase the latest concept and production models to the press.
