BMW has revealed details on its fifth-generation M% Saloon which features the manufacturer’s most powerful series production engine ever.
For nearly three decades the BMW M5 Saloon has defined the sector and become the most successful car of its type in the world.
The new fifth-generation model raises the bar even higher in the premium executive saloon stakes, combining track-car dynamics and supreme touring comfort.
Its more potent engine ever designed by BMW is matched with a race-bred chassis including the latest technology, such as an Active M differential and electronic damping control.
The 4.4-litre V8 features a turbocharged power unit as well as high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold.
Compared to the previous V10-engined M5, maximum power is up by around 10 per cent and peak torque by more than 30 per cent.
This brings impressive performance, with the new BMW M5 Salon hitting 62 mph from a standing start in just 4.4 seconds and going to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
Features such as seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration, have reduced fuel consumption by more than 30 per cent to 28.5 mpg and CO2 emissions have fallen to 232 g/km.
Both manual and auto options will be available, each with different settings for sports, relaxed or efficient driving modes.
The design is dictated by the technical requirements of the car and inside the luxurious sports-like cockpit makes driving comfortable and easy.
Bespoke M Sports seats, Merino leather upholstery plus the iDrive control system with 10.2-inch Control Display make for a comfortable drive, with all controls easily accessible and intuitive.
Drivers can change several parameters, including engine management, power steering and display information to ensure they get their ideal ride.
Standard equipment in the new M5 also encompasses DAB digital radio, Park Distance Control, four-zone air conditioning, Xenon headlights, front sat heating and Professional Multimedia Navigation system. Bluetooth and USB ports also allow for multimedia connectivity.
The new BMW M5 Saloon will be available in the UK in November 2011, priced at £73,040 on-the-road.
