The adventures of John Mullin, AutoVIP driver – Part 1

My name is John Mullin, number one collection and delivery driver for AutoVIP. This is the start of my blog, part 1, I hope you will follow me.

I’m not the Stig. I don’t get to push cars to the limit on the track. I just get to push cars to the limit on the M25 – 60mph usually. I’m not Clarkson either so I don’t take cars to the ragged edge on the Col de Turini. I just take cars to the ragged edge of the B6164. However, as a delivery driver for AutoVIP I do drive all kinds of prestige cars, in all weathers, on every kind of surface from motorway to farm track.

Today’s drive is a Mercedes CLC 350 coupe. The car shines like a black diamond in the sun, and looks aggressive with  hunched shoulders and big alloys. As usual our valeter Jeremy fusses, polishing out non-existent marks ( the car looks, and even smells brand new to me), and I start to worry about being late. Just got time to get comfy ( dead easy with seat adjustment in  every direction); set the satnav (so intuitive that even I get it right without the handbook); open the panoramic roof to get the sports car experience; and away we go.

90 minutes later I’m meeting my customer in Newark after the most relaxing drive I can remember. I’ve averaged 32 mpg and although I have not clogged it I’ve been up against the limiter most of the way – not the electronic limit of 155mph, but the 70mph limit I’ve set on Merc’s handy column stalk. This motor is so turbine-smooth that you could find yourself doing 100mph without noticing. Mr Plod in his unmarked Skoda would notice, though!

My customer is thrilled with the car, although sad to say goodbye to his SLK. The kids will fit in the back, and he can still get that kick-in-the-back acceleration – all the way to the limiter!

Customers wanting to sell Mercedes so we can keep John in a job are invited to call 08455 19 20 21 or apply online for a Free valuation and cash offer.

Audi RS3.

Going fast isn’t easy. It seems you need either skill, money or even both if you’re lucky.

Like Sheikh Hamad Al Nahyan, who as a Sheikh of the UAE, is a multi-billionaire and owns one of the largest car collections in the world; with over 200 cars including the largest jeep in the world. At over 20 metres tall and 18 metres wide, this Jeep is colossal. He also owns 2 Lamborghini Murcielago SVs which are undoubtedly fast and amazingly beautiful. He like many Sheikhs takes part in racing, but not horses, he races cars.

Yet most people in the world are not billionaire Sheikhs or Racing drivers; so we do not have endless amounts of money and driving skill. So we will not get to go fast very easily. Until now – because last month the Audi RS3 was released to the public .

If you want a reasonably cheap, supercar fast, four-door hatchback, then the Audi definitely does not disappoint. The Audi also delivers when you bury the pedal into the floor, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and is electronically limited to 155mph. This performance would usually be granted by a fire breathing V8 with 1 million bhp, but no, the Audi manages with just 335bhp on  its 2.5 litre five cylinder motor. The RS3 has so much low end torque that it can (332lb ft @ 1600-5200 rpm) easily challenge any supercar in a straight line. Also the noise it makes is absolute aural excellency; emitting a high pitched warble that will leave you revving the engine all day just to hear that exhaust note. However that is where the RS3 has its brilliance cut off, because as soon as it arrives at a corner it will just understeer endlessly until you crash into a wall.

The most disappointing thing is the looks, you can’t help but thinking that after the £39,900 you spend on the RS3, you deserve a car that looks a whole heap more special.

You could love this car but because of what Audi has done with its looks you just can’t.

Ferrari FF

Ferrari; the pinnacle of the automotive industry, have now been making the ultimate automobiles for over 60 years now and don’t show signs of stopping any time soon. Also because of their deep racing roots, Ferrari know how to make a seriously quick car. So when Ferrari boomed in to the Geneva motor show, they brought along a pretty fine set of cars. When I say fine, I mean the absolute bleeding edge of refinement and jaw-dropping allure, that will  have your heart pulling itself out of your chest cavity and towards, the new Ferrari FF. It was launched in March and it has had its eye set on breaking the boundaries. It broke the record for fastest shooting brake(two door estate) ever made. It has the largest engine Ferrari has ever made; it drops power in mountain-loads and with 503lb ft and 651bhp, it really does put all that size to use. 0-60 flies by in 3.8 seconds and bend reality at 208mph, in a four seat, 4WD that is stupidly quick.

If you want a thrill then it is an true necessity that you buy this car. Just because this has masses of power, it does not mean that it is uncomfortable, stupid and hard. It will not fling you along, rather just carrying you there in sublime comfort, albeit extremely swiftly. The interior is made from only the rarest and finest leather available and every single detail has been given the utmost respect by the engineers. You don’t have to be a genius to work out that this car is a masterpiece of engineering. At £230,000 it is a bit pricey but if you just look at it I reckon you will hand your life savings over without realising because you will be in awe of just how shockingly great looking it is. If the rule ‘save the best until last’ is true then I am because this car handles like nothing ever before it beats any Porsche round a corner because it grips and grips until your eyeballs are hanging out of your ears.

I love this car but there is only one thing on my mind; if I had that amount of money then I would walk straight past it and towards the Ferrari 458 Italia, because the 458 is so much more than a car, it is a tool of sheer fun and I don’t think I could have as much fun in the FF as in the 458. Also if you bought the 458 you would have £60,000 to spend on making you car, a one of a kind machine.

Travelling at the Speed of Sound.

Nowadays if you want to travel at the speed of sound, then your best bet is to buy a Lockheed Martin jet. They are cheap, easy to use and good value; Well that’s what you would say if you were a multi-billionaire, had the brain of Stephen Hawking and mad as a kamikaze. So is there an alternative? The answer lies no further than a Lamborghini.

The Italian manufacturers have a history of making cars that are utterly mad and accelerate like ballistic missiles. If you need to find an exception then you will be disappointed, mainly because there isn’t one; and the new Aventador does not break that rule at all. If you ever see pictures of it, it looks like an F117 Nighthawk. Every curve and angle of the Aventador is radiating pure evil. Looking past that evil, and you will see absolute beauty; in a way only a true Lamborghini fan could understand.

It not only looks like one, it will fly like one.  If one thing this is not is slow; if you have a very long road, you can reach a bowel loosening 217mph! With 0-62mph taking a thrashing at 2.9 seconds. That feat of engineering is achieved with an atom bomb of an engine that breathes in 691bhp and 509lb ft of torque from the infamous Lamborghini V12. Beleive me, this car makes noise like nothing you have ever experienced before. Forget every car you have driven in your life, in this you will discover true aural enlightenment. It sounds like all of gods angels are engaging in a symphony of holy screaming.

Behind all this usual craziness is military grade precision, everything is a jigsaw fit and nothing looks out of place. All of it is styled to look like a jet fighter, that gives it the amazing ferocity and will force you to love every inch of it. Yet this love of it will cause you to hit the floor when you find out the price: £201,000.

In a whole. This car will have you drooling with a powerful love; for the way in which it looks, sounds and goes. Even when the dealer (could be AutoVIP) drops that huge price bomb on you, I doubt there would be much stopping you from buying it, because it is art, and art is perfection.

GoodBye.

Rules, Rules, Rules.

The Monaco F1 GP at the weekend, was the accumulation of the worlds finest everything: Riches, women, boats and most of all cars. The only downside to all this: is regulations. F1 is all about regulations, if only they gave all the rules up. The racing would be absolutely amazing, this was shown with the Red Bull X1 last year. It had a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds and it could pull 8.5 lateral G in the corners, but that’s not all. Its top speed was around 292mph. How did they do this? well, they threw away the rulebook for a bit, they ended up with this and it also heaves out a collossal 1482bhp and revs to a deafening 21000rpm. However it was never really put on the track, it now is just a carbon fibre ornament at team Red Bull’s HQ, all because of the FIA’s rules and regulations.

You get all of this in normal motoring. We witness a constant battle between car makers and the Governments to be able to get what eachother wants. For example; the Aston Martin logo is probably the most respected in the world. Yet last year the governments of the world said to Ulrich Bez(Aston Martin CEO) “Your cars are making baby seals cry because they are noisy and emit lots of gas, you are going to make a small car or we will shut you down”. This of course is a propostorous thing to say to Aston Martin; but of course they obliged and now we are left with the ugly little piece of unwanted metal that is the Aston Cygnet(ugly name aswell). This little thing is a cute idea, but has sunk a bullet into Aston’s reputation.

Much to my disappointment, Aston Martin are not the only ones who are doing this. Ferarri say that they have to make an eco-friendly car too. Honda are being sabotaged as well, remember the legendary VTEC engine? It’s gone. The goverments of the world and the racing boards are taking the fun out of motoring and all the speed with it.

Imagine it; the world without any restrictions on cars, everyone would be a whole heap happier and racing would be better to watch. Possibly the only time this has happened, was when America and Canada got hold of the worlds richest and created the Can-Am racing series. In this there was only one rule: don’t listen to the rules. The teams went mental. One team created the Chaparral 2J, a fire breathing 700bhp monster that had two underfloor fans, that meant it could go round corners at full throttle and not go off course. Then a few years later Can-Am was banned by the infamous FIA because they saw it as dangerous.

All over the world car development is being halted by Government regulations. Just because the Governments claim they want to make driving better, if they really wanted to then they would leave the Manufacturers alone and let them develop the tools to really make driving more satisfying.

Thanks to you all and go to www.AutoVIP.co.uk.

Next week Lamborghini Aventador.

2011 Nissan GTR vs 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S

Ever seen a Spanish bull fight? Absolute brutality. The fight goes on for what seems like a lifetime, as you watch the enraged bull charging towards the bullfighter. The bullfighter then outsmarts the bull and pulls the red cape away. Sometimes this will end with the bullfighter injured, yet the bullfight always ends with the bull being killed. This is like the ferocious battle between the 2011 Nissan GTR and the 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S. The Nissan is like the bullfighter; always the clever one with speed and agility. While the Porsche is the Bull, the one that powers the fight with all muscle and brawn, but no brains and after it fails; they will bring out another one.

The Porsche  Turbo S uses a twin turbo flat six producing 523bhp and this cannons the Porsche from 0 to 60mph in 3.3 seconds. Want to know the top speed? 196mph. Utterly insane! All this acheived with a super lightweight aluminium chassis. The Porsche should be bought however, for the thrill of the handling; It is simply sublime, you will be able to go maximum throttle around a hairpin with pinpoint precision. There is only a slight downside because all the thrills in the world will never make up for the price: £132,600.

The Nissan GTR on the other hand is £67,000 leaving you with a saving of £65,600 from the Porsche. The thing with the Nissan is the badge. You really have to be a real car enthusiast to know it that it is a supercar that can warp towards 60mph in 3.0 seconds. But if you want to be a little discrete, then buy it, because it isn’t exactly a Skoda, it is face-crushingly rapid; it’ll hit the limiter on its semi-automatic double clutch gearbox at 196mph. The car is powered by a  530bhp V6. The on board computer has more power than five apple macs and has security onboard that was designed by the japanese military. This is all so that it slots right in the supercar league. With this GTR it isn’t all power and no cornering. This Godzilla of a car, lapped the nurburgring in 7 minutes and 24 seconds which is 17 seconds faster than the Porsche. Proving that Brains always beat brawn. The bull loses out to the bullfighter, again.

Overall the Nissan wins this test, because not only is it faster, it is half the price of the Porsche and is less ugly than the Porsche. The Porsche loses out on this because as always its just another 911.

There is another Porsche coming along; this time not a 911, but something a whole lot more beastly.

If you want to buy any of the cars featured then just go to www.AutoVIP.co.uk.

Thanks and watch this space!

Saving the world

If someone said to you: do you want to save the world. I bet the first thing that springs to mind is flying through the air at supersonic speeds, catching airplanes that are falling from the sky, or punching away an asteroid the size of Russia. Yet all that is improbable, first of all no one without the help of some genius will ever be able to fly or have super strength. Secondly the world is slowing down at the speed of a glacier down a mountain. So most people will zone out of that and carry on with their lives. But the people who are not most people will find a way to save the world even if it means it takes years of hard work. Usually putting in some solar panels, which will knock a few pounds of the electricity bill but are ultimately useless. Another is adding a wind turbine to your back garden this is an expensive and costly procedure and will result people thinking that you have your head so far up your own bottom that your drinking your own stomach acids.

This all leads us merrily to eco-friendly cars. They are a collection that ranges from works of art towards,  something that looks like someone has stuck a battery to a toy car, and then back up to things that people with an IQ less than 160 can not comprehend.

I for one am in favor of saving the world, but the majority of car makers who are adding electric cars to their range do not even make an effort in doing it in style, speed or even comfort. Moreover some don’t even bother because it’s a laborious process. Yet there are those magic specialised brands that will go all out making the electric car that looks like art and drives great. There are only a few examples of this first is the Peugeot EX-1 which broke the Nurburgring electric lap record at 9:1.333. It accelerates 0-62 in 3.7 seconds and 0-162 in 6.6 seconds which is light speed compared to other eco-cars and even fuel powered cars. The price for this, well there is no price because it’s not going to be made, as it is a concept. Over to a more available car: the Tesla Roadster S. 0-62 is beaten in 3.7 seconds and it will reach its limit at 135 mph. The economy is a four hour charge that’ll run it for 90 miles. The price for this is £110,000; which if you have that money I doubt you would spend it on a car that 99.9% of people will think is a Lotus.

So finally we come towards the Fisker Karma S, a car designed by Henrik Fisker, a man who designed the: BMW Z8, Aston Martin V8 vantage, Aston Martin DB9 and now the utterly beautiful Fisker Karma S. Powered by two electric motors and one petrol motor putting out a combined figure of 959 lb ft of torque and a mind bending 670 BHP. 0-60 is done in 4.6 seconds bearing in mind it is a two and a half ton car. Also its not exactly a car that is low on luxury as it is set to rival the Aston Martin Rapide (another car of H.Fisker) when it is launched in the UK in early 2012. It also only will cost you £70 to run for a year and £80,000 to own. On top of that quite a few celebrities have jumped on the Fisker bandwagon e.g. Tom Cruise, George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio; and they are seriously cool guys. Overall a fine piece of kit and if you want one call AutoVIP and we’ll sort you out.

All this brings me to an end. So goodbye, and good luck saving the world.

Welcome Petrolheads

Welcome to
the brand new AutoVIP BHP car blog, a safe refuge for the laid back petrolhead.

If you are reading this and you have a little
old rusty minivan  outside that should’ve
been sold 15 years ago, you may be in a certain group who like to dream about
supercars but will never get one because they are too brash and vulgar or you
simply do not have the cash; then please read on as you will discover the path
to becoming the ultimate motorist.

Yet if you
are reading this currently and you`ve already invested your money into a
Ferrari or a Lamborghini – well done. You are in the minute part of the
population that doesn`t seem to care what people think so long as you get plenty
of good attention. You have already achieved the essence of driving. As you may
think you could drive for an F1 team you still must read on to refine your
taste and skills, to achieve the epitome of ultimate driving prowess.

First of all
the people short of cash don`t despair because there are alternatives to the
great five of Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz.
For example the Ford GT is a great car and all but nowadays it’s over £130,000
which is a colossal amount of money. But you can buy the same badge, engine,
brakes, the whole package on a new generation Ford Mustang GT500 for £80,000
less, saving you lots to pay for other things to do to your Mustang because,
come on, if you are brave enough to get a Mustang then you are brave enough to
kit it out with wheels, engine and other things but that`s for you to decide.
Well your end result will be nothing short of eye grabbing. Also if you did not
kit out the car then no harm done it’s a great fun car.

As for the
ones with decent cars on their drive there are five rules to owning a supercar
or sports car, that will make you ultra-cool.

1)  Never ever wear sunglasses: you may
think you look like a driving god, but in actual fact passers by will want to
hurl hard objects at your lower region and call you a “Knob”.(This rule applies
to convertibles.)

2)  If someone signals you to rev your
engine standing still; Don’t, but if another driver revs at you show him who`s
boss by shattering his eardrums with an earful of your exhaust note.

3)  Go for a regular fun drive on a long
twisty road somewhere. This will enable you to get to know your car. Also you
will find out more about your driving traits and will enjoy your motoring a
heap more.

4)  If you boast about the car, do it
subtly one fact at a time. Never walk up to someone (who you know cannot afford
what you have) and prompt a conversation about the car you`ve got.

5)  Colours. Ones not to choose: red(unless its a ferrari), yellow,
lime green, purple, gold. Very cool colours: White,  grey, black, blue, dark green, arctic silver.

Thanks and see you next time
